Bed Adhesion

Bed adhesion refers to how firmly the first layer of a 3D print attaches to the build plate. It is the single most critical factor in determining whether a print succeeds or fails — if the first layer doesn’t stick, nothing else matters.

Why It Matters

The first layer is the foundation of the entire print. Every subsequent layer is stacked on top of it. If any part of the first layer loses contact with the bed, that spot becomes a weak point. The print may shift (layer shift), corners may curl (warping), or the entire object may detach mid-print.

Good adhesion requires three conditions to be met simultaneously: a clean build surface, the correct nozzle-to-bed distance, and the right bed temperature for the material being used.

Key Factors

Cleanliness

A clean bed is the single most important factor for reliable adhesion. Fingerprints contain natural oils that create a barrier between the print surface and the filament. Even a single fingerprint in the center of the print area can cause a print to fail.

Solution: Clean the build surface with isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher concentration) before every print. For stubborn residue, wash with warm water and dish soap, dry thoroughly, then wipe with alcohol.

Leveling / Tramming

The nozzle must be at the correct distance from the bed across the entire print surface. Too far, and the filament doesn’t get pressed onto the bed (poor adhesion). Too close, and the nozzle scrapes the bed or blocks extrusion.

The paper-test method is the standard manual approach: slide a piece of standard printer paper between the nozzle and the bed at each corner. You should feel slight resistance — the paper should move but not tear.

Modern printers increasingly feature auto bed leveling (ABL) using a probe (BLTouch, inductive sensor, or load cell) that measures the bed surface and compensates for unevenness.

Adhesion Aids

When geometry or material makes adhesion difficult, several helper techniques are available:

  • Brim — a single-layer-wide extension around the part’s base, increasing contact area. Easy to remove. Best for most situations.
  • Raft — a printed platform underneath the part. The part prints on top of the raft rather than directly on the bed. Useful for very small parts or ABS.
  • Glue stick, hairspray, or painter’s tape — applied to the bed surface to increase grip. Common on glass or uncoated beds.

Build Plate Materials

PEI sheets have become the modern standard. PEI offers excellent adhesion when heated (the part sticks firmly during printing) and self-release when cooled (the part pops off as the sheet contracts). Other surfaces include glass (smooth finish, needs adhesive helper), textured powder-coated PEI (better for PETG), and Garolite/G10 (good for nylon).

Temperature Guidelines

Different materials require different bed temperatures for proper adhesion:
