GLB Unveils DP-C1: A "Consumer" Metal 3D Printer for ¥10,000
Source: Fabbaloo, 3DruckGLB (Global Laser Box) has unveiled the DP-C1 at the Shenzhen Global Consumer Electronics Expo, billing it as the world’s first true consumer-grade metal 3D printer. Priced at approximately ¥10,000 (~$1,500), the machine uses Selective Laser Melting (SLM) technology to fuse stainless steel powder into solid metal parts — a process traditionally confined to industrial facilities with six-figure equipment budgets.
The specifications are undeniably impressive for the price point. The DP-C1 features a 300W air-cooled fiber laser and a cylindrical build volume of 108mm diameter by 100mm height. It weighs approximately 140kg and requires either argon or nitrogen as an inert shielding gas. The printer accepts standard stainless steel metal powder, opening the door to functional metal parts for tools, fixtures, and small mechanical components.
However, industry analysts are pushing back hard against the “consumer” label. Metal powder is both toxic if inhaled and highly flammable in fine-particle form, requiring proper handling equipment and ventilation that most home users do not have. Furthermore, parts printed on the DP-C1 are not ready to use straight out of the machine — they require support removal and optional heat treatment in a separate furnace, which is neither included with the printer nor commonly available in a home workshop.
The more realistic market for the DP-C1 lies in professional and educational settings. University engineering labs, jewelry design studios, and small dental laboratories represent the natural customer base — environments where staff already have training in material safety, where ventilation and protective equipment exist, and where the ability to produce one-off metal prototypes on-site at this price point is genuinely transformative.
What makes the DP-C1 significant regardless of the labeling debate is the price signal. At roughly ¥10,000, it is by far the lowest-priced SLM metal printer ever brought to market. Even if no consumer ever buys one, the DP-C1 demonstrates that metal additive manufacturing is following the same trajectory as polymer FDM printing did a decade ago — starting in industry, moving to desktop, and inevitably approaching affordability for smaller shops and advanced enthusiasts.
GLB has not yet announced a specific ship date for the DP-C1, but the company is expected to begin taking pre-orders within the coming months. If the machine delivers on its promises, it could mark the beginning of a new chapter in desktop metal fabrication — even if “consumer” remains aspirational for now.
