618 Shopping Festival 2026: Consumer 3D Printers Become a Major Sales Category

Source: Xinhua, People's Daily, JD.com, Tmall

China’s annual 618 shopping festival in June 2026 marked a turning point for consumer 3D printing. Desktop 3D printers ranked among the top-selling electronics categories on major platforms including JD.com and Tmall. Bambu Lab (拓竹) achieved a stunning milestone — rising from #1 in the 3D printer subcategory to become the #1 brand in the entire office supplies sector on Tmall, a first for any 3D printing company. On JD.com, 3D printer sales grew 80% year-over-year, with Bambu Lab and Creality (创想三维) firmly holding the top two positions.

The leap in quality from just four years ago is staggering. Comparison images circulating on Chinese social media juxtapose 2022-era kits — open-frame acrylic enclosures with tangled wiring and visible layer lines — against 2026 models featuring enclosed aluminum frames, automatic bed leveling, multi-color printing, and AI-powered failure detection. The message is clear: 3D printing has shed its “hobbyist tinkerer” image and entered the mainstream consumer market.

New use cases are driving demand well beyond the typical maker community. Home DIY enthusiasts are printing replacement parts and custom organizers. Schools in Shenzhen have begun incorporating 3D printers into standard technology curricula, with students designing and fabricating simple mechanical assemblies. Small businesses are leveraging desktop printers for short-run production of jigs, fixtures, and end-use parts — a segment once reserved for industrial equipment. Multi-head printer sales jumped over 9× year-over-year, while children’s 3D printer sales grew over 8×.

Bambu Lab, the Shenzhen-based company that has rapidly become a household name in 3D printing, opened its first flagship retail store at MixC Shenzhen Bay in September 2025, followed by a second store in Bao’an in May 2026. The stores offer hands-on demonstrations and same-day pickup. In a further sign of international ambition, Bambu Lab launched its first authorized experience store outside China in Bangkok’s Siam Paragon in July 2026, targeting Thailand’s growing maker and education markets.

AI integration has become standard across nearly all mid-range and premium consumer printers. Features include real-time print monitoring with anomaly detection, automatic parameter tuning based on filament type and environmental conditions, and — most notably — text-to-3D and image-to-3D generation directly from the printer’s companion software. These AI capabilities have dramatically lowered the barrier to entry for new users.

The structural growth signals are unmistakable. On JD.com alone, 3D printing filament sales rose 90% and 3D printing custom service orders grew 140%. On the export side, Anycubic (纵维立方) led AliExpress’s first-ever 618 China brand出海 (going global) ranking in the 3D printer category, followed by ELEGOO and Creality — underscoring that Chinese brands now command an estimated 90% of the global consumer 3D printer market.
