Walking into a filament store (or scrolling through Amazon) can be overwhelming. PLA, PETG, TPU, ABS, ASA, nylon, polycarbonate — and then every material comes in 20 brands and 50 colors. The good news is that 95% of beginners should start with PLA and only deviate when they have a specific reason.

The Quick Decision Framework

Ask yourself these three questions in order:

  1. Is this your first spool? → Buy PLA. Don’t overthink it.
  2. Does your part need to survive heat (car interior, outdoor sun) or mechanical stress? → Consider PETG or ABS.
  3. Does your part need to flex, bend, or absorb impact? → Consider TPU.

Deep Dive: When to Move Beyond PLA

PLA is fantastic — it prints easily, smells like almost nothing, and costs $10-20 per kg. However, it has fundamental limitations:

  • Heat sensitivity: PLA softens at around 60°C. A phone mount left in a parked car on a summer day will sag and fail.
  • Brittleness: PLA snaps under stress. Functional parts like brackets or hinges will crack.
  • UV degradation: PLA breaks down in direct sunlight over months.

Upgrade Path 1: PLA → PETG

PETG is the natural next step. It’s almost as easy as PLA but significantly tougher and more heat resistant. No enclosure is needed, and warping is manageable. Most all-metal hotends (260°C+) can handle PETG.

When to upgrade: You’re printing functional parts — hooks, brackets, tool holders, anything that will bear weight or see mild heat.

Upgrade Path 2: PLA → ABS

ABS offers genuine engineering-grade properties: high strength, high heat resistance (~100°C), and good durability. But it demands more from your setup:

  • Needs an enclosure (or at least a draft shield) — ABS shrinks significantly during cooling, causing corners to lift and parts to warp off the bed
  • Produces styrene fumes — strong, unpleasant, and potentially harmful in enclosed spaces. Print in a ventilated area or near a window
  • Requires a high bed temperature (90-110°C) — not all printers can reach this

When to upgrade: You need parts that will survive heat, impact, or chemical exposure. ABS is the go-to for automotive, RC hobbies, and functional prototypes.

Better alternative: Consider ASA instead of ABS. ASA has the same mechanical properties as ABS but with excellent UV resistance, making it ideal for outdoor use. It’s more expensive and still requires an enclosure.

⚠️ Abrasive Filament Warning: Glow-in-the-dark, carbon fiber, and metal-filled filaments will rapidly wear a standard brass nozzle (0.4mm). A brass nozzle feeding glow-in-the-dark filament can go from 0.40mm to 0.55mm in a single print — destroying dimensional accuracy. Always switch to a hardened steel nozzle (around $5-10) before printing abrasive materials.


Storage: Moisture Is the Enemy

All filaments absorb moisture from the air. PLA is the most forgiving, but PETG, nylon, and TPU are hydroscopic — they soak up humidity like a sponge. Wet filament causes popping, steam bubbles, stringing, and weak layer adhesion.

  • Audible popping or crackling sounds from the nozzle
  • Steam bubbles visible in the extruded plastic
  • Rough, matte surface instead of smooth and glossy
